AFE is a web-based database for recording and providing information on coin finds. It is developed by the Romano-Germanic Commission (RGK) of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) together with the Frankfurt Big Data Lab of the Department of Databases and Information Systems (DBIS) at Goethe University Frankfurt/Main.
AFE-WEB applies the concepts of stable numismatic identifiers and the Linked Open Data methodologies developed by the project Nomisma.org.
At present, four installations of AFE-WEB are in operation:
AFE-RGK: As part of the project "Corpus der römischen Funde im europäischen Barbaricum", AFE-RGK primarily records finds of ancient coins from Germany outside the Roman Empire. The database is also used to document coin finds from Hesse and Baden-Württemberg.
AFE-PL: Used for recording and publishing ancient coin finds from Poland and territories historically connected with Poland over the last 100 years. The data are registered by the project "Finds of Roman coins from Poland (FRC PL)" of the Institute of Archaeology, University of Warsaw, funded by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science.
AFE4HD is the coin find database of the Center for Ancient Numismatics (ZAN) at Heidelberg University. The database publishes coin finds from various research projects as well as finds processed in cooperation with the GDKE Rhineland-Palatinate, the Numismatic Network in Baden-Württemberg and within BA and MA theses.
AFE-HU: The database of the project Ancient Coins East of the Danube (ACED) at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at ELTE University, Budapest.
AFE-UKR: Hosted by the German Archaeological Institute within the framework of the Federal Foreign Office-funded KulturGutRetter program. Its aim is to document endangered collections of coin finds.
